《Time of Grass》, a special exhibition of open storage collections in the second half of the year

About the Exhibition

Seong Min-woo has painted grass for a long time. Yet in his pictures, grass is not a simple subject. Grass that is easily passed by along roadsides, vacant lots, riverbanks, and fields stands as an individual entity, becomes a colony in which multiple beings are placed together, and remains on the picture plane even after it has withered and disappeared. The artist layers silk over a multiply mounted ground, then builds up ink wash, color, gold powder, and silver powder in turn. This exhibition examines how Seong Min-woo's paintings have treated grass through the works Portrait of Grass, Oikos_Between, Garden of Grass, and Oikos_Bouquet. Starting from establishing a single blade of grass as an independent subject, his work expands into relationships where multiple blades of grass are placed together and entangled, prompting a re-examination of the human gaze that has named and classified nature. Time of Grass shows how these blades of grass come to acquire their own place and time within the picture.
