About the Exhibition

For a long time, painting tools, musical instruments, and pens were the exclusive domain of male artists. Women's bodies were subordinated to the desires and gaze of others, and their names were not their own but ones given to them by husbands or fathers. Yet in every era, there were those who set foot on lines not permitted to them, holding and building their own place even without a name. The exhibition 《She on the Boundary》 sheds light on the lives and thoughts of women that have long been buried in the shadows. In the exhibition title 'She on the Boundary,' the word 'boundary' refers both to the gendered line dividing beings permitted as normal from those standing outside it, and to the historical line separating those who were recorded from those who were not. This exhibition fully unfolds the dynamic currents of erased women's narratives, spanning reality and self-awareness, history and the other, love and healing, and restores voices buried in the shadows of history, reaching back to Na Hye-sok, the point of origin for Korean women's narratives.
