About the Artist

Francisco de Goya was born in 1746 and died in 1828; he was a Spanish painter active at the boundary between Rococo and Romanticism. He worked at the Spanish court and was also famous as a court chronicler. Goya's body of work departs from traditional tendencies, emphasizing subjective emotion and bold expression, which had a great influence on later artists. In particular, his brushwork and choice of subject matter provided an important foundation for Impressionism and modern art.
