About

Yokosuka Museum of Art opened in 2007 inside Kannonzaki Park in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, to mark the 100th anniversary of the city's founding. Its atrium-style building lets natural light in through skylights, and its distinctive glass-covered exterior conceals perforated steel walls designed to guard against sea salt damage. The building won the BCS Prize in 2008 and the Japan Institute of Architects Award in 2010. The museum holds around 5,000 works focused on modern and contemporary Japanese artists connected to Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula, including painter Fujishima Takeji. It also houses a dedicated gallery for illustrator Taniuchi Rokuro's magazine cover art. The facility is currently closed for long-term renovation and is scheduled to reopen in September 2026.
