About

The Tale of Genji Museum in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, opened in 1998 and was renewed in September 2008 to mark its tenth anniversary. It was established and is operated by Uji City to collect and preserve materials related to The Tale of Genji. The permanent exhibition is organized into the Heian Room, the Uji Room, a video theater, and the Story Room. The Heian Room displays a scale model of Rokujo-in, the mansion of the tale's hero, Hikaru Genji, along with a full-size reconstructed ox-drawn carriage, while the Uji Room presents the "Uji Chapters," the tale's final ten chapters, through sound and lighting. The video theater screens original works, including puppet animation.
