About

The Towada Art Center opened in April 2008 on Kanchogai-dori, the government office street of Towada in Aomori Prefecture. Designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa, it serves as the hub of Arts Towada, the city's project to build a town through art. Its individual exhibition volumes, linked by glass corridors, make the museum itself look like a small town, while large glazed openings turn the artworks toward the street. The permanent installations include works by Japanese and international artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Ron Mueck, Yoko Ono and Yoshitomo Nara, and moving between the pavilions feels like a stroll through the city itself. This open structure, dissolving the boundary between museum and town, is what defines the place.
