An art museum in Matsue City, Japan.

About

The place where the footsteps of merchants who once traveled along an ancient road came to a halt formed the foundation of this museum. Traces of Purushapura, which the Kushan Emperor Kanishka held as a sacred city, still seep through the concrete and brick. Walking through the corridors of the exhibition rooms, the face trapped within a stone carving seems to hold both penitence and power at once. Cave sculptures from Gandhara and a Buddha statue from Mathura gather here, planting a double sense of exotic fragrance and stillness. As the light draws near, a faith placed somewhere within the space makes the visitor hold their breath.
