About

The Showa Museum of Art is a private museum that opened in 1978 in Nagoya's Showa Ward, holding a collection of about 800 objects centered on tea ceremony utensils and decorative arts assembled by its founder. There is no permanent display; the collection is shown only during three special exhibitions each year. On the grounds stands Nanzan Juso, an Aichi Prefecture designated cultural property. The study and tea rooms, which originated with the Watanabe family, senior retainers of the Owari domain, were relocated here in 1935 and designated in 1981; the interior is normally closed to the public. A garden dotted with tea houses around a pond is another highlight. Since the museum opens only during exhibition periods, visitors should check the schedule in advance; the next exhibition begins on September 19, 2026.
