About
The Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg (MAMCS) opened in November 1998, with then French Minister of Culture Catherine Trautmann in attendance. The building was designed by Parisian architect Adrien Fainsilber, selected through an architectural competition. Presented as one of the few large French museums dedicated to art from 1870 to the present, it holds Gustave Doré's major work Le Christ quittant le prétoire (1867–1872) alongside pieces by Jean Arp and Victor Brauner. A bronze horse sculpture titled Hortus Conclusus by Italian artist Mimmo Paladino, purchased by the city of Strasbourg in December 1996, was installed on the museum's rooftop in August 1998, where it remains today.
