About
The NYK Maritime Museum, on Kaigandori in Naka Ward, Yokohama, began as the NYK Historical Museum of Materials, which opened in December 1993 inside an NYK warehouse on Yokohama's waterfront. In June 2003 it moved into the ground floor of the adjacent Yokohama Yusen Building and was renamed the NYK Maritime Museum; the renovation for that move later won the Best Reform Award at the 15th BELCA Awards. The Yokohama Yusen Building itself was completed in 1936 as NYK's Yokohama branch office, built to mark the company's 50th anniversary; its facade is lined with sixteen large columns of a style known as the "grand order." The permanent exhibition traced NYK's history from the Meiji Restoration to the present, including ship models such as the liner Asama Maru and displays on the pre- and postwar development of Japanese shipping. Due to redevelopment of the surrounding area, the museum has been closed since April 2023. It is scheduled to reopen around spring 2027 in the adjacent, newly built Yokohama Building, on its second floor, under the name NYK Maritime Museum.
