An art museum in Masugata, Japan.
About
This museum is a space that captures, at a glance, the house-building techniques of traditional Japanese farmhouses and merchant town dwellings. Beneath the wooden pillars and grass-covered roofs that make you pause without meaning to, the lives of people who once farmed and traded seem to flow on still. At night, the thatched roofs, stacked layer upon layer like a kiln, catch the moonlight and take on a warm glow even in the darkness. On one side are the tools once used by carpenters and traces of house-building; on the other, the daily lives of farmers remain intact. Buildings made of wood, earth, and stone step outside of time, settling the heart into calm. Here it is not simply the buildings that remain, but the very warmth of the people who once lived in them.
