About
The Natural History Museum Rotterdam, founded in 1927, has been housed since 1987 in Villa Dijkzigt in the Museumpark. The villa was built between 1849 and 1852 for the Van Hoboken family by architect Johan Frederik Metzelaar and became a national listed monument in 1973. In 1995 a glass pavilion designed by architect Erick van Egeraat was added in the garden, joining the 19th-century villa with contemporary architecture. The collection numbers more than 370,000 objects — birds, fish, reptiles, mammals, shells, and fossils — including a broad range of the fossils found in the Netherlands. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday and shares the Museumpark with the Kunsthal and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
