About
This museum on Place Guillaume-Tell in Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin, was founded in 1864 on the initiative of Frédéric Engel-Dollfus and the Société Industrielle de Mulhouse. Lacking a dedicated building in its early years, the museum gained one in 1883 when the Société Industrielle de Mulhouse constructed it directly. The museum occupies an 18th-century mansion built in 1788, also known as the "Villa Steinbach." Many works were damaged during World War II, and the museum reopened in 1958 after the city of Mulhouse took it over. Its collection centers on European paintings from the late Middle Ages to the present, with a particular emphasis on 19th-century works and on painters connected to the Mulhouse region.
