About
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux was officially established by the Chaptal decree of August 31, 1801. After first opening in 1810 in a building on the Allées de Tourny, it moved in 1821 into the rooms of a former courthouse at the Palais Rohan; fires in 1862 and 1870 — the latter destroying several major works — then pushed forward plans for a dedicated building. The current building, designed by architect Charles Burguet, was begun in 1875 and completed in 1881, consisting of two wings flanking the gardens of the Palais Rohan. The collection spans European painting from the 15th to the 20th century, including Rubens' The Martyrdom of Saint George, along with works by Van Dyck, Titian, Chardin, Delacroix, and Corot.
