About
The Musée d'Art moderne de Troyes traces its founding to 1976, when collectors Pierre and Denise Lévy donated roughly 2,000 works of modern art to the city of Troyes. The former episcopal palace, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, was renovated to house the collection and the museum opened in 1982 in the presence of President François Mitterrand. The collection spans French art from 1850 to 1950, from Realism through Fauvism, Cubism and the School of Paris. Some 80 works by André Derain are on display, making it one of the most significant Derain collections in the world, alongside works by Fauvist painters Georges Braque and Maurice de Vlaminck and more than 140 glass pieces by Maurice Marinot. The museum reopened in April 2024 after a renovation that began in 2018.
