About
Monte d'Accoddi is a prehistoric altar site near Sassari in Sardinia, brought to light by Ercole Contu's 1952 excavation. Santo Tiné continued excavations in later decades. The monument was built in two phases. An earlier structure finished with red-painted plaster, known as the "Tempio Rosso" (Red Temple), was built around 3000 BC; it was later enclosed by a larger truncated-pyramid altar added around 2700–2800 BC. The site spans the transition from the Ozieri culture to the Abealzu-Filigosa culture. The altar's base measures roughly 37 by 30 meters with a surviving height of about 9–10 meters, and a ramp leads to its summit. It is thought to have served as a sacred space where animal sacrifices were offered.
