About

The Musee de Montmartre stands at 12 rue Cortot in Paris's 18th arrondissement, occupying some of the oldest buildings on the Montmartre hill, dating from the 17th century. The Maison du Bel Air, built in 1660, houses the permanent collection, while the Hotel Demarne hosts temporary exhibitions. These houses were also artists' homes: Renoir rented a studio here in 1876, painting Bal du moulin de la Galette and La Balancoire, and Suzanne Valadon lived and worked here with her son Maurice Utrillo. The museum opened in 1960 and is run by Le Vieux Montmartre, a local heritage society founded in 1886. Its collection numbers about 6,000 works, including paintings, posters, and prints; in 2014 a reconstruction of Valadon's studio-apartment opened to the public and the Renoir Gardens were redesigned. The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 19:00.
