The 'Madonna and Child,' which Michelangelo worked on but ultimately left unfinished, quietly holds ages of time within its white stone. Stepping beneath the round dome, a stillness rushes in, as though the weight of years has been carved into the sculpture. This space, left behind by Michelangelo's first attempt at architecture, slowly draws visitors' steps into a silence steeped in sculpture and stone. The statues stand as though all at once assembled on a stage, frozen in an unfamiliar span of time. In the darkness of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, a soundless story flows on, as if the spirit of the Medici family had been carved into the stone.
