About
LaM opened on May 21, 1983, designed by architect Roland Simounet, and stands within an urban park in Villeneuve-d'Ascq. Its founding traces to October 16, 1979, when Jean and Geneviève Masurel donated their art collection to the Lille urban community. The Masurels' donated collection numbers roughly 6,700 pieces, including 4,500 drawings and prints, 1,000 sculptures, and 500 paintings, among them nine works by Picasso, six by Braque, seven by Léger, and six by Modigliani. In 1999, L'Aracine — a collectors' group founded in 1982 by Madeleine Lommel, Claire Teller, and Michel Nedjar — donated its collection of art brut, including works by Adolf Wölfli, Aloïse Corbaz, and Auguste Forestier. LaM is considered the only museum in Europe to present modern, contemporary, and outsider art together under one roof.
