About
The Kyoto City Archaeological Museum, in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, opened in November 1979. Its building is a converted former Nishijin Textile Center, designed in 1914 by architect Seigo Motono to exhibit and promote Nishijin textiles; it was registered as a Kyoto City Tangible Cultural Property in 1984. The exhibits are arranged into sections by period and theme, presenting buried cultural properties excavated within Kyoto through originals, replicas, and photographs, including a reconstruction drawing of the Rajomon gate, a replica Jomon-period dwelling site, Heian-period pottery, and foreign ceramics. Some items can be photographed and handled directly. The museum is run by its designated administrator, the Kyoto City Archaeological Research Institute.
