About
The Korean visual artist Haegue Yang was born in Seoul in 1971 and currently works primarily between Berlin and Seoul. Working across a range of media, her art reveals the heterogeneity within everyday life, employing an intricate yet abstract formal language that disrupts cultural and social systems. In 2017 she was appointed full professor of fine arts at her alma mater, the Städelschule, a position she still holds, alongside numerous international exhibitions and awards. Her work has been shown at major museums around the world, including solo exhibitions at S.M.A.K. (Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent, Belgium), the Pinacoteca de São Paulo in Brazil, the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea, Tate St Ives in the UK, MoMA in New York, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. She notably presented a solo exhibition at the Korean Pavilion of the 2009 Venice Biennale. Her work primarily addresses everyday life, history, the human condition, and questions of politics, taking forms that stimulate both the senses and the intellect. Rather than offering direct explanation, her exhibitions provide visitors with a sensory experience that invites deep reflection. Intricate yet abstract in form, Haegue Yang's work reveals the heterogeneity of everyday life within existing systems, translating human life and social context into art. Her practice goes beyond mere visual experience, leaving room for viewers to explore and interpret for themselves.
