About
Adjacent to Kenrokuen, the famed garden in Kanazawa, this museum opened at its present site on November 12, 1983, designed by architect Hiroyasu Tomie. Its predecessor, the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, had opened in October 1945 but was requisitioned and closed later that same year; it reopened on October 12, 1959, in a building designed by architect Yoshiro Taniguchi. As of March 31, 2013, the collection numbered 5,444 items. It grew substantially in 2005 with a donation of 2,224 ukiyo-e prints comprising 3,016 individual works. Among its holdings is a National Treasure — a colored-glaze pheasant-shaped incense burner by the potter Nonomura Ninsei — alongside other Ninsei ceramics and a six-panel folding screen depicting the four seasons of farming by Kusumi Morikage, both designated Important Cultural Properties. The museum stands at 2 Dewa-machi, Kanazawa, with a total floor area of 12,422.33 square meters. It is open from 9:30 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30.
