About
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis was founded in December 1925 by Mary Stewart Carey, inspired by a visit to the Brooklyn Children's Museum, making it the fourth-oldest children's museum in the world. It began in the carriage house of the Propylaeum in the Old Northside neighborhood, then in 1946 moved to Parry House, a limestone mansion at 30th and Meridian Streets. In 1976 the museum opened a dedicated five-story building, becoming the world's largest children's museum. Its collection today holds more than 130,000 objects across Arts & Humanities and Natural Sciences domains. Highlights include a Dale Chihuly glass sculpture, the Broad Ripple Park Carousel (a National Historic Landmark), an 11,000-pound Reuben Wells steam engine, and the Dinosphere dinosaur fossil exhibit. The museum draws more than a million visitors a year.
