About

The Fukuoka City Museum, in Momochihama, Sawara Ward, Fukuoka, opened on October 18, 1990, after the building used for the 1989 Asia-Pacific Exposition Fukuoka was renovated for its new purpose. Its holdings include the National Treasure gold seal inscribed "King of Na, vassal of Han" (Kan no Wa no Na no Kokuo), designated a National Treasure in 1931 and donated to Fukuoka City in 1978; it has been on permanent display since the museum opened. The permanent exhibition begins with the seal and continues chronologically with artifacts excavated from sites around the city, including Itazuke and the Korokan. The museum also holds and displays the Arrow, an automobile completed in 1916 by Koichi Yano. It is presented as the oldest surviving Japanese-made passenger car and has been designated Mechanical Engineering Heritage No. 36 by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.
