About

HNLMS Buffel is one of the main exhibits at the Maritime Museum Rotterdam, known historically as the Prince Hendrik Museum, located in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The museum was founded in 1874 by Prince Hendrik (Prince Henry), a former naval officer. HNLMS Buffel is a 19th-century ironclad warship that was originally displayed primarily at the maritime museum, but was relocated to Hellevoetsluis in October 2013, where it remains on public display today. The ship was built in 1868 in Glasgow, Scotland, by Robert Napier and Sons. It was the first ship in the Dutch navy to be propelled by steam engines and twin screw propellers instead of sails, reaching a top speed of about 13 knots (24 km/h). Its main weapon was a bow-mounted ram, intended to strike and damage wooden-hulled enemy ships. Its initial armament consisted of two guns firing 300-pound (140 kg) Armstrong shells, later replaced with 28 cm guns. The ship served as a naval instrument of coastal defense, operating alongside two other ironclads and a twin-turret ship. HNLMS Buffel stands as a landmark exhibit illustrating the museum's maritime history and the development of military technology, offering visitors an engaging experience. It is now displayed at Hellevoetsluis, where visitors can view the ship's structure and armament firsthand. There, they can learn about the vessel's historical background and design features, gaining a deeper understanding of naval history and shipbuilding technology.
