About

The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, opened on 3 May 1989, was the first public museum in Japan devoted in earnest to contemporary art. Standing on the hill of Hijiyama Park, the building was designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, who placed more than 60 percent of its floor area underground so the two-story structure would blend into the wooded landscape; the design received the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize in 1990. The collection follows three principles: major works of contemporary art since the Second World War, works that show the relationship between Hiroshima and contemporary art, and promising young artists. After closing in late December 2020 for a full renovation, the museum reopened on 18 March 2023 and continues to connect the memory of the city with the art of today.
