On a street near one of Amsterdam's great lakes, opening the iron door and stepping inside, a landscape still held within old concrete walls comes into view. The corridor, unfolding in a split-level style at the center of the building, has left behind traces of time gone by like layered stanzas. Light seeping between the stones scattered in the garden and the old stained-glass windows quietly proclaims that this place was once a nursing home. Within an exhibition space that unfolds along piled curves, Peter Black's 'Shadows of the City' quietly comes into view, and one senses a flow as if vast black-and-white photographs follow along behind it. Amid the faint air, a space where past and present seem to stand still side by side draws visitors in.
