About

The Kyoto International Manga Museum, Japan's first comprehensive manga museum, opened in 2006 as a joint project of Kyoto City and Kyoto Seika University. The building reuses the former Tatsuike Elementary School, constructed in 1929. Its holdings span roughly 300,000 manga-related items, from Edo-period comic ukiyo-e to Meiji, Taisho and early Showa magazines, postwar rental manga, contemporary bestsellers and manga from abroad. Of these, about 50,000 volumes published mostly since the 1970s are shelved along the museum's walls on the 200-meter-long 'Wall of Manga,' organized by author across three floors — boys' manga on the first floor, girls' manga on the second, and manga for young men on the third.
