About
The Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art, in Ninomaru Park within Kumamoto Castle, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, opened on March 4, 1976. It was designed by architect Kunio Maekawa and comprises one basement level and two stories above ground (partially three), with a total floor area of about 7,943 square meters. A general art museum spanning art from around the world and across periods, alongside cultural properties associated with Kumamoto, it holds a collection of roughly 3,300 works. Its Western art holdings include paintings by Ecole de Paris artists such as Tsuguharu Foujita and a print collection ranging from classical woodblock prints to Pop Art, while its Japanese art wing includes the Hosokawa Collection Eisei Bunko gallery, devoted to cultural properties handed down from the former lords of the Kumamoto domain. The museum also houses a gallery devoted to the printmaker Chimei Hamada and a room dedicated to decorated ancient tombs.
