About

The National Museum of Women in the Arts traces its founding to 1981, when Wallace and Wilhelmina Holladay incorporated the museum; it opened to the public on April 7, 1987. It is described as the first major museum in the world dedicated to women artists. The building the museum occupies was originally a Masonic Temple, headquarters of the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia. Designed by architect Waddy B. Wood, it was built between 1903 and 1907 and completed in 1908. Today, at 1250 New York Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., the museum holds more than 6,000 works by over 1,500 women artists. From August 2021 to October 2023, the museum underwent a full renovation with a campaign goal of $67.5 million. Having reopened after the project, it remains a space dedicated to showing the work of women artists under one roof.
