As if walking across stone slabs buried in time, light quietly swallowed amid the scenery of Versailles brushes against the walls of the Gallery of Great Battles. The shadows of myth and history painted by Picot seep in to the very core of the darkness, drawing visitors into the fierce intensity of 19th-century battlefields. Amid paintings evoking the coronation of the Virgin Mary, the dawn of myth and the shock of war seem to cross paths, cutting through the quiet air.
