About

In 1984, the Cartier maison and its then-chairman Alain Dominique Perrin establish the foundation. It is initially based in Jouy-en-Josas, in the Yvelines, before moving in 1994 to 261 Boulevard Raspail in Paris's 14th arrondissement, into a glass-and-steel building designed by architect Jean Nouvel. The foundation stages three exhibitions of sculptor Ron Mueck's work, in 2005, 2013, and 2023, presenting signature pieces such as Boy and Dead Dad. On 25 October 2025, the foundation relocates and reopens at 2 Place du Palais-Royal in Paris's 1st arrondissement, in the former Louvre des Antiquaires building, built in 1885. Jean Nouvel again designs the space, which now offers 6,500 square meters of exhibition area within 8,500 square meters of public space overall. The inaugural show, Exposition Générale, runs through 23 August 2026, presenting roughly 600 works by more than 100 artists including Claudia Andujar, James Turrell, Sarah Sze, and David Lynch. The foundation's collection now numbers more than 4,500 works by some 500 artists of 60 nationalities.
