About
The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History is an institution under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism that collects, preserves, exhibits, and provides education on materials from Korea's modern and contemporary history. The museum was established on March 30, 2012, and is located at 198 Sejong-daero, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The museum's director is a fixed-term public official, and several individuals have served in this role to date. The museum presents Korean history divided by era across four exhibition halls. The first hall covers 'The Founding of the Republic of Korea' from 1876 to 1948; the second, 'Laying the Foundations of the Republic of Korea' from 1948 to 1961; the third, 'Growth and Development of the Republic of Korea' from 1961 to 1987; and the fourth, 'Advancement and Global Leap of the Republic of Korea' from 1987 onward. The museum also operates a 'Children's Museum,' where children can learn the value of history through hands-on experience, and hosts special exhibitions on various themes that offer an in-depth look at modern and contemporary history. Educational programs and cultural events are also held, providing visitors with a range of learning opportunities. Nearby the museum are historic sites such as Sejong Story, Gwanghwamun, and Gyeongbokgung Palace, allowing visitors to continue what they have learned here and explore the history of the Joseon dynasty as well. The museum plays an important role in conveying Korea's history to the public through historical education and cultural experience.
