About

The Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art opened on October 23, 1974, and marked its 50th anniversary in 2024. The building was designed by the Otaka Architects & Associates and sits by a harbor open to sea and sky within the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, surrounded by a green garden. Its core collection centers on Asai Chū, a Sakura-born painter who was a pioneer of modern Japanese Western-style (yōga) painting, along with works by his teachers, students, and associated artists. A statue of Asai stands in front of the entrance, and the museum holds the 'Asai Chū Memorial Award Exhibition' for figurative painting. The museum also focuses on collecting works and related materials by modern and contemporary artists connected to Chiba Prefecture, including Chiba-born artists Ishii Rinkyō and Higashiyama Kaii.
