About the Exhibition

The history of sound has always been a process of breaking down boundaries. In the early 20th century, the Futurists drew the roar of machine civilization into art as a medium, while John Cage discovered, in silence, all the sounds of the world instead. R. Murray Schafer established every environmental sound surrounding us, from urban noise to the sound of wind in nature, as a single music called 'soundscape.' Today that inquiry turns toward what lies beyond the human ear — the frequencies animals sense, and the traces of beings quietly erased within the city. Since 2023, Sim Ida-eun (b. 1995) has taken an interest, through her series Universally Valid, in the conditions and environments surrounding ecosystems, walking the field along the paths of wildlife and endangered species and collecting sound. Under the premise that an imaginary being, 'Mr./Ms. A the Cat,' wanders the area around the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, this exhibition channels the sound from real-time audio streaming devices installed around the museum into a structure in the exhibition hall, allowing visitors to directly intervene in the sound.
