About the Exhibition

The Whitney Museum's 82nd Whitney Biennial is an exhibition exploring the shifting currents of American art. It questions the very meaning of the label 'American,' exploring shared emotion and connection in contemporary society. The Biennial includes work by artists from across the United States and from regions touched by American influence, such as Afghanistan and Vietnam. A total of 56 artists, duos, and collectives take part, exploring the relationship between animals and humans, family bonds, geopolitical complexity, technological affinity, infrastructural networks, precarious ecosystems, and shared myth across a range of media and artistic strategies. Rather than a clear ideological statement, the exhibition presents community through difference, proposing the irregular alliances and unexpected challenges needed to survive the present moment. Visitors can experience how art shapes contemporary emotion and connection through this exhibition.
