About the Exhibition

SongEun x Unboxing Project: Generative Figures is a special exhibition encompassing some 180 artists who have won or made the finals of the SongEun Art Award over the years, organized to mark the 25th anniversary of the SongEun Art Award, which has steadily discovered and supported young artists. To organically bring together this large number of artists, the exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Unboxing Project (UBP), drawing on UBP's method of providing artists with modules containing a set format and commissioning new works based on them. SongEun delivered to participating artists a box containing four sheets of plywood, each 25×25cm — symbolizing the award's 25th anniversary — and commissioned new works made using them. While every artist starts from physically identical conditions, each one's concepts, relationships, and formal approach expand in different directions depending on their own practice, producing colorful 'generative' variations. The Unboxing Project was founded in 2022 by art advisor Chae Min-jin, presenting works in which an artist's world of practice is condensed to fit inside a small box. Participating artists are commissioned to make work responding to each project's theme; the box containing the work's frame is delivered to them, and once the artist's finished piece is received, it is unboxed and exhibited. This exhibition is organized together with collaborating curator Chae Min-jin.
