About the Exhibition

This exhibition is centered on the photographic work of Richard Prince (b. 1949), addressing visual images reflecting consumer society and symbols of popular culture. Since the 1970s, he has explored the visual codes and fictions of American popular culture, addressing themes such as copyright, originality, and media representation. In particular, his signature series 'Cowboys' rephotographs Marlboro brand advertisements, critically exploring traditional masculinity and media myth-making. The exhibition includes about 150 photographic works in total, including iconic series such as 'Fashion,' 'Gangs,' and 'Cowboys,' as well as rarely exhibited works. Through work that crosses the boundaries of photography, painting, and sculpture, the exhibition shows how deeply photographic thinking is embedded in his art. In particular, the dual effect of his images — being analytical yet alluring at once — is a main highlight of the exhibition.
