About the Exhibition

This exhibition presents a selection of especially important still lifes and religious icons from the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery in Russia. Its theme is the 'icon,' the sacred image of the Eastern Orthodox Church, exploring an art form that has played an important role in Russian art history. Major artists include Aleksandr Lyapin and Ivanov, with signature works such as The Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. The exhibition includes about 120 icon works from the 19th through the early 20th century, organized into three sections: 'The History of the Icon,' 'The Artistic Character of the Icon,' and 'The Icon and Faith.' Visitors can feel both the sanctity and artistic beauty of icons at once, and in particular the 'Virgin Mary' icon stands as the exhibition's centerpiece, its intricate carving and color drawing the eye.
