About the Exhibition

This exhibition brings together, for the first time in one place, sculptures by Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) within the Metropolitan Museum's Temple of Dendur space. It includes 14 cast bronzes and pastel works from the collection of the Fondation Giacometti in Paris, alongside 3 works from the Met's own collection. Giacometti had a deep interest in Egyptian art, and the exhibition shows the dialogue formed between the ancient culture of the Egyptian temple and his artistic practice. 'Walking Woman (I)' (1932), from his 'Walking Woman' series inspired by Egyptian sculpture in particular, is installed in the space and leaves a strong impression on visitors. The exhibition is an important opportunity to explore the relationship between the artistic identity of a leading 20th-century sculptor and ancient culture.
