About the Exhibition

This solo exhibition of Polish-born artist Ewa Juszkiewicz is part of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum's Blanca and Borja Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection exhibition program. Her first solo museum exhibition, it brings together a selection of more than 20 of her paintings. The exhibition reinterprets women's portraiture within the tradition of European landscape painting, critically reconstructing classical symbols of feminine beauty. Her work uses traditional technique and a refined visual language, while carrying a sustainism-like sensibility that redefines the image of women. The exhibition explores the historical tradition of women's portraiture, examining how the image of women has been formed in European painting. In particular, compositions in which the figure's face is concealed by cloth, hair, fruit, or plants overturn the conventions of traditional portraiture while reinterpreting the image of women in a contemporary context.
