About the Exhibition

Centering its dialogue on Pablo Picasso's 1937 work Guernica and Dumile Feni's 1967 work African Guernica, this exhibition aims to compare works that share similar themes and modes of expression despite arising from different historical and cultural contexts. It connects Picasso's anti-war message with Feni's anti-war expression in an African context, exploring their intersection as a shared human experience of war and oppression. Dumile Feni was an artist who created work under South Africa's apartheid regime, his work reflecting both personal narrative and social oppression at once. The exhibition includes one work in total, African Guernica, exploring historical and political context through its dialogue with Picasso's Guernica. Through the formal similarities and thematic commonalities of the two works, visitors can experience multiple perspectives on war and oppression.
