About the Exhibition

This exhibition explores East Asian cultural exchange and aesthetic value through ceramics. It presents a selection of ceramics from China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula, each in its own gallery, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of ceramics across years and beyond time. The exhibition includes a Northern Song dynasty (960-1127) ewer and basin, a representative work whose value goes beyond mere utility to genuine artistic worth. Also on view are ceramics by Ogata Kenzan, a representative artist of Japan's Rinpa school, and works employing the inlay technique often used in ceramics from the Korean Peninsula. Drawing on the celebrated holdings of the Nezu Museum, which owns some 2,300 ceramic works in total, the exhibition selects especially fine masterpieces, offering an opportunity to explore in depth the history and cultural meaning of ceramics. Moving through the galleries, visitors can appreciate ceramics from China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula, experiencing the distinctive aesthetic worlds shaped by the nature and culture of each region.
