About the Exhibition

This is a special exhibition organized to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Albertina Museum. It explores the origins and development of the Albertina's world-renowned collection of graphic art, with particular attention to the role of women. In particular, it addresses how Marie Christine — the beloved daughter of Empress Maria Theresa — and her husband Albert systematically built the collection. The exhibition includes many celebrated works, such as Albrecht Dürer's Young Hare, Hieronymus Bosch's The Tree Man, Pieter Bruegel's Big Fish Eat Little Fish, and Michelangelo's Male Nude Seen from Behind. The exhibition looks back on the collection's past while exploring the value of art for the future. In addition, a special installation created by internationally renowned artist Rosa Barba will be added to the Albertina's collection after the exhibition, adding a new dimension to the historical context the exhibition addresses.
