About the Exhibition

This exhibition sheds light on the innovative artistic achievements of the 'Der Blaue Reiter' (The Blue Rider) artists, active in Munich, Germany, in the early 20th century. Sharing a common vision to recreate art and transform society, they made their ideas widely known through two exhibitions held in 1911-1912. The exhibition is organized around Franz Marc's color theory, Wassily Kandinsky's abstract art, and Alexander Sacharoff's exploration of artistic boundaries beyond gender, among others. The activity of women artists is especially notable, with highlights including Gabriele Münter's Expressionist painting, Elisabeth Iwanowna Epstein's self-portraits reflecting on identity, Maria Franck-Marc's mysterious still lifes, and Marianne von Werefkin's dramatic paintings. With some 240 works in total, the exhibition shows that the questions the Blue Rider raised — about personal freedom, artistic practice, and boundary-crossing innovation — remain valid today. The exhibition was organized as part of preparations for the Lenbachhaus's 1929-2029 anniversary events.
