Bang Hai-Ja — Scattering the Light of the Heart Across Heaven and Earth

About the Exhibition

This exhibition introduces the work of Bang Hai Ja (1937-2022), who built an independent artistic world drawing nourishment from the culture and art of both Korea and France as she moved between the two countries. As one of the events commemorating the 140th anniversary of Korea-France diplomatic relations in 2026, it presents major works by period from Bang Hai Ja, one of the early abstract painters as a woman artist, drawing on the MMCA's collection alongside works held in France that have not previously been introduced in Korea. Broadly surveying the life, worldview, and mode of expression of an artist who took 'light' as her lifelong source of inspiration, and exploring its significance, the exhibition allows visitors to trace her various pictorial experiments and process of insight. Organized through the MMCA's collection and cooperation with the Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, this exhibition presents about 80 works.
