About the Exhibition

This exhibition explores the close relationship between art and popular culture in the 1980s Soviet Union. It shows how various elements of popular culture — television, film, rock music, pop culture — influenced artistic creation, shedding light on the artistic environment jointly formed by communities of artists, musicians, filmmakers, and others. Based on the concept of the 'long 1980s,' the exhibition extends beyond the literal decade to include the period from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. It presents about 40 works in total, mainly composed of photography, painting, video, and musical material. Among the works Soviet artists created in combination with popular culture, those with a distinctive visual language especially draw visitors' attention.
