Thomas Gainsborough, born in England in 1727 and died in 1788, was a painter, designer, and printmaker active in England. A leading painter of late-18th-century Britain, he was, alongside Joshua Reynolds, one of the most celebrated figures of his time. Gainsborough painted mainly portraits and landscapes, capturing a natural atmosphere with light color and concise brushwork. He found particular personal artistic satisfaction in landscape painting, regarded alongside Richard Wilson as a contributor to the development of English landscape painting. He was also a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts, exerting great influence on the art world.
