Fernando Botero

About the Artist

Fernando Botero was a contemporary artist born in Colombia in 1932 who remained active until 2023. A painter and sculptor, he had a major influence on the South American art world. His work is marked by exaggerated body proportions and inflated forms, capturing humor and South American sensibility. His signature work 'Mona Lisa, Age Twelve' in particular is a parody of the Mona Lisa, well illustrating his distinctive style. Known as 'the Picasso of South America,' Botero built an artistic world of strong, singular character.
