About the Artist
Phidias was an ancient Greek sculptor, born around 480 BCE and died in 430 BCE, active in Athens. Regarded as the greatest artist of Western antiquity, he excelled in both sculpture and architecture. He oversaw artistic production during the administration of Pericles and led the reconstruction of the Parthenon. His artistic world is marked by refined, balanced sculpture centered on the gods, showing particular skill in creating cult statues. Signature works include 'Athena Parthenos' and the 'Statue of Zeus at Olympia,' and the decorative sculpture of the Parthenon was also produced under his supervision.
